Hamsters love empty toilet paper tubes and empty paper towel tubes.

What are some things around the house hamsters can use for beds in their cage?
Empty kleenex boxes, empty baby wipe boxes (cut a whole in the front for entering and make sure they Do Not eat the hard plastic), empty jars (mayonaise, mason, leaving the lid off), etc.

What all can be used with their bedding?
Shredded toilet paper, shredded paper towels, shredded kleenexes, etc. Do Not use cotton balls. Some people say you can use lint out of the dryer, but i do not recommend this because the lint can get stuck inside their cheek pouches once wet with saliva. Shredded tissue does not get stuck because they usually immediately take it to their bed area and take it out of their pouch.

Can hamsters live together in the same cage?
No. Not usually. Syrians (Teddy Bears) will eventually start fighting after a couple months of age. They will cause serious injury or even death. Sometimes, Dwarfs can live together under close supervision. You must seperate them at first sign of fighting before it is too late (includes Robo Dwarfs). They can chew each others legs off, chew ears off, tails, bite holes in each others backs. It can get very serious, very quickly. If you are going to breed hamsters, my advice is, as soon as they are finished, seperate them back into their own cages. Breeding can take a few minutes to a couple of hours. You will notice when they are finished, they will act exhausted and usually go to seperate corners of the cage. Dwarfs on the other hand, usually the male will stay with the female during pregnancy without fighting. He will also help her with the babies when they arrive.

When can you handle baby hamsters?
Do Not handle baby hamsters before they open their eyes and ears. If they mother smells your scent or another scent on the babies, in a lot of cases, she will eat the babies. Also, don't be alarmed if she eats one or two of the babies right off. They are like dogs and cats, if they sense that something is wrong with that baby like it is sick or too weak, they will get rid of it and dispose of it the only way nature taught them. It is totally natural and normal. This doesn't mean that she is a bad momma.
